If I were teaching a class on superhero film, I would make Catwoman (2004) the half-way point of the class.  Chronologically, the movie arrives after Fox successfully put out two X-Men movies and Sony has delivered some Spider-Mans.  Warner Bros has shut down its Bat-franchise and will sometimes think about making a superhero movie, but everything you read in the press that WB is considering is still stuck in the idea that superheroes are campy and should be comedic, or is a reimagining where they'll use the name but everything else will be so changed, it will bear no resemblance to the comics.  

Moving to Low Content Mode for a Few Days

I've had a good time posting the past week, but I think I wore myself out a bit.  In the wake of what I consider to be a highly successful Bat-Week, I'm going to go into low-content mode for a few days and catch up on some things.

Signal Watch Watches: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

I'm considering this post a "first take" review.  I'm stating that now partially because I do plan to see the movie again in the theater (and likely many times in the future) and partially because I've already seen how this plays out for me trying to talk about a Nolan movie on the first go-round and pretending like I got everything.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) has a tremendous amount of territory to cover, and contains a terribly ambitious film that I think, did modern movies not get capped at 2.5 hours as a run-time, could easily have fleshed itself out a bit more and run an even 3 hours or longer.  The movie has the task of laying out it's own story, giving a conclusion that satisfactorily resolves character arcs and plot threads from prior films, and digging far deeper into the thematic elements of the prior movies.

From a content standpoint, of course it's a mishmash of the entire scope of this thing we call "Batman", with the movie seeming to borrow plot from a few different bat-sources, including Knightfall, Batman: The Cult, The Dark Knight Returns and from No Man's Land- stories from different Bat-eras and varying Bat-creators, and but all sharing central motifs of a lost city.  But, that said, Nolan has managed to very much craft a new story, making this final installment feel very much like a section or book within the book and less like an episode.

That Catwoman Pic? a fake

apparently this was a Photoshop job. Well, what do you want? The outfit they had Adriane Palicki in for the WW pilot teasers was clearly 50% photoshop, filters, etc.., but was still the official WB picture. We'd gotten the pic from Project: Rooftop, and went back to give them proper attribution, and they posted that it was a fake. By a faker.

I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer before seeing Hathway in the costume.

Hathaway as Catwoman - a good look at the suit

A little Darwyn Cooke, a little-90's Catwoman with the gloves and boots, a strong influence from the Huges' covers. Not really grokking the goggles, but okay.

But can she top some of the classic Catwomen?

Here's the first official pic of Anne Hathaway as everyone's favorite thief/ femme fatale, Catwoman, in the upcoming Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. That certainly looks like the catsuit she's been wearing in the comics the past decade, originally drawn by Darwyn Cooke, I believe.

However, the goggles and blue lights are new.  I'm looking forward to seeing what this scene is all about (its not like the Catwoman I know and love would bother to ask before running off with the Bat-Pod).   

Mostly I'm just happy to know there's a new (if final) installment in the Nolan Bat-films.

Real Life Catwoman Kind of Hilarious

Apparently there's a real life Catwoman running around New York. She's not exactly a criminal mastermind, but you have to appreciate her moxie. She walks into a store wearing a kitty mask, gives the clerk a note, they give her cash, she leaves.

You kind of have to imagine how much having Batman around would escalate this whole situation. Here, the clerk is out $86. In Gotham, the windows would be smashed, the displays destroyed, and two bystanders somehow killed.

Batman is still kind of awesome, though.
