Hallow-Zombie Watch: Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Watched:  10/09/2021
Format:  HBOmax
Viewing:  First
Decade:  1980's
Director:  Dan O'Bannon

Well, that was a lot of fun.  Y'all were right.

I have been intending to watch this since I was 18, and I always just forgot to watch it.  But "Add to My List" and HBOmax are an excellent pairing for getting me to actually watch some things.

I don't have a ton to say about the movie.  It's good, Rated-R chaotic fun, and I was shocked to see James Karen in the first scenes, and then realize I was also looking at Clu Gulager.

Anyhoo.  Not writing it up, but very glad I finally saw it.

  1. Somehow I ended up watching the third Return of the Living Dead film before any of the others. I think I saw it before I saw Night of the Living Dead. It's a weird series, in that John Russo who had worked with Romero on Night of the Living Dead still retained some of the rights, and worked on this series.

Dan O'Bannon who directed Return of the Living Dead is pretty great. He went through film school with John Carpenter and was pretty instrumental on Darkstar. He felt he didn't get the credit he deserved for that film though and ended up working on Jodorowsky's Dune adaptation, where he met HR Geiger. When O'Bannon sold his script for Alien, he brought HR Geiger along to that one, but stepped aside and didn't direct.

  2. Oh, yeah. I mostly know O'Bannon from Darkstar and Alien. I was actually thrilled to see his name on this as the credits started. I had no idea he did this movie or probably would have got to it sooner.
